Snow Quilts

Artist Simon Beck must really love the cold weather!

Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, he spends days plodding through the snow in raquettes (snowshoes), creating these sensational patterns of snow art.

Working for 5-9 hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of three soccer fields!

The geometric forms range in mathematical patterns and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs when viewed from higher levels.

How long these magnificent geometric forms survive is completely dependent on the weather. Beck designs and redesigns the patterns as new snow falls, sometimes unable to finish a piece due to significant overnight accumulations.

The main reason for making them was because I can no longer run properly due to problems with my feet, so plodding about on level snow is the least painful way of getting exercise. Gradually, the reason has become photographing them, and I am considering buying a better camera. - Simon Beck

Delta Flight Lightning Strike

This would sure cause one to reconsider one's life carefully, especially the pilot!

This is the biggest hole in an aircraft caused by a lightning strike that I have ever seen. The pilot must have gotten religion immediately after he wet his pants. I'll bet his ears rang for quite a while afterwards.

OK. So, you're in the left-hand seat of an airliner, cruising gently along at 400 knots. The aircraft's on auto-pilot and you're browsing through The Financial Times, checking to see how your new shares in Facebook are performing while you sip a nice cup of coffee. Suddenly the loudest sound you will ever hear goes off just behind your left ear! You're blinded by the flash and can't hear yourself panic. But you're still alive, so you immediately consider retirement!

A pilot friend sent these photos this morning of an Atlantic Southeast Airlines / Delta Connection aircraft, after it suffered a lightning strike.

Video: San Diego Blackout 2011 Update 1

So I'm reading on Drudge Report and Twitter about this massive blackout happening in San Diego.  1.4 Million people are without power currently.  I've been watching the Packers/Saints game and they haven't mentioned a word about it yet.

I did a video search on Youtube and this is all I've found so far:

Here's a more relevant video:

It all seems very strange to me.

According to this article, an SDG&E official just stated, "We expect power to be out well into the night and into tomorrow in some areas." A transmitter line between Arizona and California was severed, causing both major connections in the region, causing the outage. The extreme heat in some areas also may have caused some problems with the lines, according to SDG&E. "Essentially we have two connections from the rest of the world: One of from the north and one is to the east. Both connections are severed," said the SDG&E official.

How were both connections severed?

East Coast Earthquake

The USGS has determined that the epicenter of Tuesday’s earthquake was in a cemetery just outside of Washington, DC. The cause appears to be all of our founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

How Hot Is It?

One picture is worth a thousand words......

This is Elliot, an English Bulldog, and this is an "un-posed" picture (trust me, you couldn't actually make Elliot do anything) of said pooch trying to beat the heat after his owners emptied their cooler in the driveway in Lamesa, TEXAS.
