Minnesota Viking Pumpkins

How's it going, Todd?

We saw your coverage of the Vikings at http://www.swankboys.com/2011/11/minnesota-vikings-stadium-push-to.html. Excited by the great start the Vikes are having this year, we decided to get creative and carve some pumpkins of top Vikings players. I thought they'd be right up your and your reader's alley.

Check them out here: http://www.iexposure.com/2012/10/11/minnesota-vikings-pumpkin-stencils . We also posted the custom stencils we used to make them.

If you like them, we'd be thrilled if you shared them with your readers. Feel free to repost the images.

Bored friends brainstorm big boar plan

KCCI MOBILE News

At this year's Iowa State Fair you should definitely meet Fred Hoiboar.  Basically, a few years ago friends were sitting around at the fair and drinking beer.  They came to the conclusion that they could win the Biggest Boar competition.

So all of them throw in some money. Since they're (almost) all Iowa State University fans, they name the boar Fred Hoiboar.

ISU head basketball coach Fred Hoiberg also throws in some money to help out. Hoiberg chooses a charity to support, Camp Odayin, a Minnesota camp for kids with heart disease like his.

The group is selling t-shirts to raise money, they've created a Facebook and twitter page for Fred Hoiboar.

The boar is being feed more than 20 pounds of food a day. They hope to be close to an all-time weight record for the boar by fair weigh in date.

You can learn more about Hoiboar at FredHoiboar.com

A Nice Email from Cody

Dear Todd Swank

I'm huge fan of your site and I visit it regularly. I'm emailing you right now to ask for a favor. I was born with a condition similar to yours, I have a short arm and four fingers on my hands just like you. What I've done is made a product. What it is is basically my hand print put on a piece of card stock and framed with the words "just deal with it...." written below. That is why I've contacted you- I would much appreciate it if you put a link to my shop on your website. Your website gets a lot of views and I've invested a lot of money into this project. I'd be devastated if i didn't make a profit.
here is the link:

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this email, Have a nice day :)

Sincerely,
Cody Bendickson- A.K.A Nemo

Best of Luck to You, Cody!

Response to Microsoft's Vision of the Future

You look like someone barfed spaghetti on you. LOL

And I watched that MS video you posted. Absolutely ridiculous futurism fantasy. The only thing I found reasonably probable was the flat white display the guy was using at his desk. But this transparent little credit card sized phone that can generate holograms and apparently has no battery? Come on, even Star Trek never went this far into the absurd. Earth: Final Conflict did with their rollup phones, but those at least are potentially on the horizon. J I also like how the voice recognition doesn't misunderstand a thing. We both know real-world voice recognition leaves much to be desired. And of course, OS stability and self-healing is still not quite where it needs to be either.

But what REALLY made me laugh was the refrigerator that tracks how much of what you have and orders it for you. That little slice of pie in the sky has been the funniest bit of vaporware floating about the internet since some fool stuck a TV screen into a fridge door. LOL I mean seriously, are we that lazy we need the fridge to make out our grocery list? And will it talk to the cabinet doors and medicine chest so they can take stock of how much Clorox, floor wax, and Advil we've got on hand?

And of course there's no mention of security or privacy because in the idyllic world, no one can hack your phone, tabletop, or refrigerator. And that info about where you're going won't be left anywhere after you exit the cab. ;-) Trust us!

But hey, I'm still waiting for the 42" concave wrap-around monitor MS Research promised would be on the market in 2003. J Guess that was a non-starter too. Oh well, where would Silicon Valley be without grand dreamers like these guys casting wide nets into the "what if"? I guess I shouldn't scoff too much, they finally came out with a phone OS that works. Sadly it took Google to do it. :D

Nice Emails from Some More Houston High School Students

So I received a lot of emails from a high school class in Houston this week.  Here's an excerpt of an email from their teacher:

well, I am the Houston teacher who last year emailed you about some students maybe emailing you and not much happened....

Well, we are giving it a try again and several students say they have emailed you.

Aside from watching your Miami Ink episode, they also read a short summary about you that you have posted online. My preAp class also has to do a report on what they thought about you and what you have gone through- Page 1. They have to look up a "handicap" others may have and write about it and what laws, technology, medicines etc are they to help them out- Page 2.

Page 3, they have to looked up the American Disabilities Act and give me info about it in regards to how it affects business and whether this is a good law to have or not...plus their own opinions...

page 4 is what they have learned from this report.

By the way, the students also did a one period writing about you and the video they saw or about someone they may have treated improperly due to any handicaps, culture, religions etc.... Those are handwritten and do have some nice writing to them.

As I had said before, my kids are from very low income families and most are from families that are new to the US. They themselves are going through adversities in their own.

They speak of you as a celebrity. Apart from the ones who have actually written to you, there are few more that seem like they would want to be something stops them.

I do teach science but I enjoy the medical/science aspects of science and really want my students to understand how science impacts all our lives.

You have been great and I really dont want to burden you too much. I had meant to write to you before the first student did but she sure beat me to it.

Yes, I have some great kids to know.

thanks,
jorge

Here's some of the emails along with my responses:

Hi , this is Michelle
i just got done reading this articles about you. i would like to tell you that you have inspired me that you didn't care what people thought of you and how it doesn't matter to be different from other people. When you was a childhood you said when people come up to you about your arms you come up with wild things to me that was funny because you came out of the blues telling random stories. Also i saw the tattoo you got that have a image of your hands on your shoulder yeah i was wondering why do you have a picture of your hands on your shoulder. What made made you get that type of tattoo and what does it symbolizes? and i would like to know how did you feel when you was different from everybody else?

P.S please reply back thank you

Hi, Michelle!!

Thanks for the great email!! You're very kind.

My tattoo was based on an inspiration my wife and I had.

It's obviously my hand. It is reaching out of some rough waters which represent our past and some of the challenges we've had to navigate in life. Between my childhood and my boy's being born with heart conditions, we felt like we'd sailed some pretty stormy seas in life. But regardless of our situation, we always maintained our hope and just kept swimming to the surface. That hand is working hard, reaching out of that water and towards a bright sunny sky which is meant to represent our future and the great days we have ahead of us as a reward for the sacrifices we've made.

Regarding your question about being different, I just wrote a reply to another student and I'm going to give you that answer here as well.

I know people now-a-days are so judgemental so I was wondering, after people have heard your story, do they still judge you?

I don't know. If they do, they don't really tell me about it.

I'll bet if you asked the people who I see on a daily basis, they'd tell you they don't even think about the fact that my arms are different. They know me as a goofball who sings a lot, tells inappropriate jokes, and just acts a little bit weird from time to time. People I know will make jokes about my arms, but that's basically us flipping crap to one another. I know how to trash talk with the best of them.

Occasionally, I'll catch strangers staring at me. It doesn't really bother me any more. Maybe I'm getting old and just don't care. Or perhaps I've figured out better ways to deal with it than I did when I was younger.

Many times when I see people leering at me, I'll tell myself "They must just know me because of my website." It's probably not true, but that line of thinking makes me feel better about myself. And that's all that matters to me.
I can't really blame others for staring at me because I do stand out in a crowd. It's human nature to sneak a peek. Believe it or not, I catch myself doing it from time to time when I see somebody that looks unique.

I could let it bother me when people treat me differently because of my arms, but I have no way of controlling it.

People are going to stare at me. They're going to say things to me about it whether I want them to or not.

For example, some times when I'm in a fast food restaurant, the people who work behind the counter offer to carry my tray for me. My first reaction is to get annoyed because I'm quite capable of carrying my own tray and I've never heard them ask other customers this same question. But when I think about it more deeply, I recognize that they're just trying to be nice to me. They're certainly not trying to offend me, even if I might infer that they think that I'm not capable of doing it myself. Instead of being upset, I smile at them, thank them, and politely decline their offer.

I try to remember I can't control how other people are going to treat me. But I can control my reactions to those situations. At some point, you have quit worrying about what people think of you. Instead try to lead a life that makes you proud of yourself when you go to sleep at night. Everything else will work itself out from there.

Thanks for your interest! Tell your teacher I said Hi!

Even with you're deformity are you still close to God? Do you feel he made you that way?

Yeah, I guess I feel God made me this way, although science would say it was a result of a Genetic anomaly identified as Holt Orem Syndrome.

I like to say that we all have to play with the hand that God dealt us. I have no idea why He makes some people a certain way and others a different way, but there's nothing I can do to change it so I just have to make the best of it. My son has had a lot of medical challenges in his life and I always tell him I have no clue why God chose to give him these challenges, but He must have something pretty special in mind for him and he's being prepared by enduring so many difficulties early in life.

We have a favorite saying around our house:

"I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much."

Nice Email from a Student in Houston, Texas

Hi Mr.Todd!

Today my teacher had told us a story about short arm guy and all my classmates discussed like crazy with it!!

Your story inspiring me Mr.Todd. You have very great confidence, you always proud of what you had no matter how hard your life is. You easily caught everyone attention with your life outlook and funny websites, I watched all of them. I show it to my family, somehow we all got interested. We read so much about you Mr.Todd, how your past, how you came over with your life's struggle and how you make it a legend.

Hey Mr.Todd, if it not a bother, this is a crazy question that I always want to get an answer from you, if you see someone with longer arms, he has the same strength as you and he want to compete with you, who get more advantages? Maybe you found it weird. But thanks Todd. I hopes everything well in your life.

A very small dog is on the loose...

Todd,

Thought you might enjoy this email I received. I live in the DFW area and followed your trip here a few years ago to visit a sister (?).

The following email showed up on a HOA email blast. I edited out personal information and location. The first place I thought they needed to look was in a mouse trap.

Dog on the Run
My neighbor and their children have lost their dog, Bianca, sometime today (9-14-2011).
Bianca is solid white, about 2" tall, very friendly and she has been chipped. FYI - she speaks little English.

Nice Email from KT in Florida

Hi Todd...

I am trying to read everything on your "Last Ride on Zray" but wanted to say HI...:)

SO...hope all is well with you, I am hanging tough, have one more trip to the skin ca. doc. Just more fun. But I am doing well, considering. Today, my old guy (Bud) is going to take me out to lunch. I told him I just couldn't stand cooking. :)

So, I love the picture of you standing in that flower garden-type place. You are looking good. I admire you more than I can say, and don't even think otherwise, after all...I am pushing 80 y/o. :)

I have to tell you this, and please don't misunderstand... When my problem came up, I had to make a very difficult decision..bilateral mastectomy, and max. chemo/radiation. Now, I am not telling you for sympathy. That was over 4 years ago. I am thankful to still be here. The decision I am talking about is NOT having the bilateral implants. I don't regret it. I feel good, and I can wear all my old T-shirts. :) I don't know why I wanted to tell you this, in fact, I may have told you before. That is one of my problems...short term memory loss, due to the medications the docs put me on. BUT...I am not complaining. I am still here long after the docs said I probably wouldn't be.

So I give thanks every day for my life. And I mention you and your family in my prayers very often. I think the Good Lord made His light shine upon you. And you are doing what He wants you to do...letting people know how normal your life is in spite your original problem. So I think of you and do the same. I'm sorry if I am boring you with all this info. I just felt like letting you know (maybe again) how much I think of you and admire you.

As for me, the one thing that kept me going was the absolute support of my family and every friend in person and on the Internet. I had calls, visits and emails during the six months I was having the Chemo/radiation. I truly believe that it was that one thing that kept me going, kept me strong and determined to stick around.

If I hadn't had the 100% support of my 55 year mate, Bud, I am sure I wouldn't be here. He was with me every step of the way. He cooked. He did the laundry. He ran the vac. He shopped. I was unable to do any of the above. I think this is the most important thing that kept me going. A person receiving the treatment I had absolutely needs someone as supportive as I had to keep them going. I had family and friends, but the one that kept me going was my Bud. :) (Uh...I was 12 when we got married.:)

So I wanted everyone to know that if they have a friend/family member with any serious health problem, STICK WITH THEM. Support them, let them know you are THERE for them. There is nothing that strengthens a person as much as that...support and prayers. Sorry my email got so long. I guess "talking" to you brought back memories I wanted to share. :) Keep safe. KT

A Different Point of View

“It’s just a matter of perspective.” We often hear this phrase when we find ourselves trying to resolve differences in opinions or trying to appreciate something out of the ordinary. But for Todd Swank, this phrase could probably sum up a life philosophy that made him – in his attempts of trying to fit in – extraordinarily stand out. Robert Todd Swank from Prior Lake, Minnesota has become somewhat of a celebrity in his own right not necessarily because of how he looks but because of his overall outlook on life.

You see, Todd Swank is someone who would typically catch your attention if you happen to pass by each other on the street or at a supermarket. He was born with rather oddly shaped arms. His left arm is a few inches shorter than his right arm and he only has four fingers on each of his hands. Although some people may see this as a physical disability, he never really let this hinder him from trying to do what other people regularly do. Growing up, he got into sports, learned how to drive, and even played several pranks just like any other kid. Although initial impressions towards him were awkward and at times rather insulting, he always found a way to get around these and show people that it wasn’t all just about his arms.

Having such a positive outlook on life, even when he was very young, is probably why a lot of people took more notice of him (his arms aside). Taking light and sometimes even making fun of his situation, Todd manages to show people that it only takes a different way of looking at a situation in order to make the most out of it. In his case, his arms helped him chase away bullies, come up with hilarious jokes for his stints in stand-up comedy, and even get a few perks like a better parking slot in school. Despite his disability, it is rather clear that he was able to turn this into an advantage which allowed him to enjoy life to say the least.

What’s better though is that Todd’s story isn’t an obscure one. He has found a way to turn the attention he gets initially from his short arms into a means of motivating and inspiring others, especially those with similar disabilities. Through his blog (www.shortarmguy.com), Todd shares his trials and tribulations to a world-wide audience in a manner that is interesting, funny, and at times provocative. More than just talking about how weird his arms look, he writes about opinions and daily happenings from his very own perspective. He also posts some of the emails he finds funny. What makes him such a successful blogger is that he is able to elicit numerous reactions from his daily posts, be they positive or negative. Todd knows that it’s impossible to please everyone and that what he writes (or the manner in how he writes) may offend the sensibilities of others who see his efforts as self exploitation. He takes everything in stride explaining that nothing he writes is meant to be offensive and it simply boils down to differences in how people perceive things. Rare as they come, Todd still makes it a point to respond to people who give his site disappointing nods. This just goes to show that he strives to make the best out of everything that comes his way.

More than to simply entertain people, Todd also considers his blog as a way of inspiring and motivating others by looking at almost anything in a positive light. The overall message he wants to convey through his blog is that it’s only a matter of perspective and attitude whether you let yourself be weighed down by a situation. Although he jokes about being world famous as the main reason he started the blog, he modestly believes that there is no harm trying to change other people’s attitude towards their situation.

It’s interesting to note that Todd’s celebrity status and goal of inspiring and motivating people goes beyond cyberspace. Probably as a bonus to his goal of being famous, he was featured on the hit TV show MiamiInk on TLC in June 2007. During the show, he got the opportunity to get a tattoo done by renowned tattoo artist Chris Graver. Not skipping on the chance to share his philosophy to a different audience, his tattoo design reflected the trials he’s gone through and the hope he holds for getting past these obstacles. Throughout the segment, he also shares snippets of his life wherein he talks about how you should “deal with the hand that God dealt you.”

Looking at the way Todd Swank presents himself, you somehow realize that his fame and reputation isn’t defined by the way he looks but rather the substance and wisdom behind his words and beliefs. If Todd Swank finally achieves the level of fame he jokingly aspires for, this will not be because of what he looks like but because of whom he is and how he lives his life.

Nice Email about a Boy from India

I was wondering if you'd heard about this little boy in India, born with 34 digits? 10 toes on EACH foot, 7 fingers on each hand, and no thumbs. He's the new world record holder. I was amazed at his feet. Here I thought I had flat feet! I got nothing compared to him. Anyhow, enjoy the article. Maybe when he grows up he'll come across your site. J
